We’re excited to announce the first Textile Initiative event of the year!

Join us to make your own kite using bamboo and leftover silks. We will craft, adorn, and animate our kites, led by the expertise of Limo Hair and Sophie de Serière, hosted in the studio of Maria Blaisse.

Kites have special and complicated traditions as they’ve had different uses throughout time. Silk and bamboo kites were made initially to measure distances for the military, to record and calculate wind readings and also to provide communication from far away, a bit like ships with flags. Later, the art of kite-making and their ornamental elements became an important part of rituals and pleasure all over the world.

Artists, Limo Hair and Sophie de Serière, have been researching and making their own kites inspired by these traditional techniques and using scavenged and leftover materials. We will be hosted by Maria Blaisse, who has devoted many years to research into bamboo; we will be inspired by her intuitive, playful, and exploratory approach to material.

This workshop has a maximum of 12 participants.

No experience is necessary and materials will be provided.
Fee: €40 including lunch

From 4pm we will go outside to fly our kites, and more people are welcome to come and see the results and join us for a drink to celebrate the opening of the Textile Initiative 2025 programme.

The rest of the programme will continue to unfold in September.

Het AFK ondersteunt Textile Initiative met een projectsubsidie.

Datum: 15-06-2025 (10am-4pm (with a lunch break) followed by kite flying from 4pm)
