Visual artist Rosa Sijben (1988, Alkmaar) studied Fine Arts at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and took part in the prestigious SOMA summer programme in Mexico City. At the completion of her studies in 2012, she won the Fine Arts Award as best graduation candidate. After graduation she participated in several residency programmes, allowing her to live in the cities of Alkmaar, Basel and Mönchengladbach. In 2014, she had her first solo exhibition at the Kunstverein in Düsseldorf.

Sijben makes sculptures, installations and performance art in which she focuses on the social and aesthetic aspects of objects and actions. She is engaged in reconsidering the nature of the object and the action, and she invites the viewer to do the same. In her 'situational choreographies' Sijben examines the reality which arises when art and life overlap.

Public Playground Coalition

Rosa Sijben is part of the Public Playground Coalition which consists of the Over 't IJ Festival, Foundation NDSM wharf and DasArts. This Coalition was impressed by Sijben’s open and investigative artistic personality and they value her engagement with social issues. In the coming year, Sijben plans to continue developing A sculpture like you and me, a work she conceived of last year with the medical ethicist S. Boers. In addition, she will do research into how her present work (visual and performance art) can be integrated with theatre.
