Ana Navas
In the work of multi-media artist Ana Navas (Venezuela/Ecuador, 1984), notions of transformation, assimilation and appropriation play an important role. Navas' presentations often consist of installations in which paintings, objects, assemblages and video work function as 'areas' in which these processes of transformation and assimilation take place. 'Imitation' is raised as a theme in her work, but also ideas around (stereotypical) identities and the role that associated costumes play in social interaction. A specific topic Ana has focused on in het work in recent years is the combination of fashion, power and women's identity.
She studied at the Staatliche Akademie der Bildenden Künste in Karlsruhe from 2004 to 2010, after which she continued as Meisterschülerin (MA) with Franz Ackermann. Between 2012 and 2014 she was a resident at De Ateliers in Amsterdam. This was followed by residencies in France, Mexico, Brazil, Colombia and the Netherlands. Her work has been shown at Sperling, Munich (2022), Pequod Co, Mexico City (2021), tegenboschvanvreden, Amsterdam (2019), Kunstruimte van De Nederlandsche Bank in Amsterdam (2019) and P/////AKT Amsterdam (2017), among others.
